This is the part most NZ bingo sites aren’t telling you. The Online Casino Gambling Bill is working its way through Parliament right now, and it passed its first reading in July 2025 — 83 votes in favour, which isn’t even close. The government isn’t messing about with this one.
They’ve already started asking operators to register interest for licences. Up to 15 will be auctioned off, probably around September 2026. Each licence covers one platform, lasts three years, and comes with serious compliance requirements. Tougher advertising rules hit on 1 May 2026 — breach them and you’re looking at fines up to $5 million.
The big date is 1 December 2026. From that point, only licensed operators will be permitted to offer online casino gambling to people in New Zealand. That applies extraterritorially — meaning offshore sites that haven’t obtained a NZ licence will need to stop serving Kiwi players or face enforcement action from the Department of Internal Affairs.
